President Harry S. Truman announces the surrender of the Japanese, a signed copy, 14 August 1945
A mimeographed copy of President Truman's statement, dated August 14 1945, signed, announcing that he had "received this afternoon a message from the Japanese Government in reply to the message forwarded to that Government by the Secretary of state on August eleventh. I deem this reply a full acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration which specifies the unconditional surrender of Japan. In the reply there is no qualification. Arrangement are now being made for the formal signing of surrender terms at the earliest possible moment. General Douglas MacArthur has been appointed the Supreme Allied Commander to receive the Japanese surrender. Great Britain, Russia, and China will be represented by high-ranking officers. Meanwhile, the Allied armed forces have been ordered to suspend offensive action. The proclamation of V-J Day must wait upon the formal signing of the surrender terms by Japan...," the statement is signed at the foot in blue-black ink by President Truman. The paper on which the statement is printed is somewhat toned. Framed; together with a colored reproduction of a portrait of Truman.

The official confirmation of the end of World War II, signed by the President.
Visible area of statement: 10 1/8 x 7 5/8 in (25.5 x 19.2 cm)
