Footnotes

  • The Yomei-mon at Nikko remains one of Japan's most famous, architectural icons. Murray's Handbook, guiding tourists through Japan in 1913, calls it 'the exquisitely beautiful gate', pointing out that one of the pillars depicted its design upside down in order that too much perfection did not threaten the Tokugawa line.

Nikko is the last resting place for both Tokugawa Ieyasu and his Grandson, Tokugawa Iemitsu. As such, it is one of the principal sites to see both the art and patronage of The Tokugawa and the Clans which supported them. The enormous, granite torii presented by The Daimyo of Chikuzen in 1618 towers to over 27 feet stands in close proximity to the five storied pagoda, 104 feet high, given by Sakai Wakasa-no-Kami in 1659. As the Japanese proverb correctly states: 'Do not use the word magnificent, until you have seen Nikko!'
