Footnotes

  • In 2006 an avid Agatha Christie fan participated in an auction of contents from the author's former home Greenway House in Devon, prior to the property being turned over to the National Trust.
Lot 677 was described as "A small canvas trunk with leather corners the sides bearing initials 'C.M.M.', 55cm. wide. (now with interior strongbox)." The initials for Clara Margaret Miller, Christie's mother. Th fan was successful in purchasing lot 677 for £100. She took it home but was unable to open the strongbox inside because the key had long since been lost.
The trunk remained a popular talking point but unopened for a number of years until the owner, who was having building work done, forced open the box with a crowbar.
Included amongst the contents of the box were two diamond set jewels and it is those pieces which are offered here.
Dame Agatha Christie (1890-1976) is one the world's best loved crime writers. The author of over 80 novels, screenplays and short stories, her most famous characters were Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot.
Christie's mother, Mrs Clara Margaret Miller, was described by her official biographer Laura Thompson as "the most important person in her life". In her autobiography Christie refers to her mother's jewellery as "Jewellery did not, as nowadays, consist of a few pieces of 'real jewellery' and large quantities of costume jewellery. Imitation jewellery was frowned on as 'bad taste'... My mother's valuable jewellery consisted of 'my diamond buckle, my diamond crescent and my diamond engagement ring'.
