A sardonyx cameo brooch, by Castellani, circa 1860
The carved oval cameo within a surround of fine gold filigree and delicately looped decoration to the reverse, cameo possibly ancient, maker's mark, length 3.3cm

Footnotes

  • The cameo is carved with an image of a crane. Typically represented with one leg raised and holding a stone in its claw, it most commonly denotes the female figure of Vigilance in secular allegory, one of the virtues required of monarchs and others in public life. According to a legend mentioned by Aristotle in his Historia Animalium in the 3rd century BC and repeated in 12th century medieval bestiaries, when the crane fell asleep the stone dropped and immediately startled it awake, so that it was subsequently ever watchful.
