Watercolour on ivory, signed on the obverse with the artist's gilt-monogram BL, the reverse signed and inscribed Ann Whitmore/ Feb ye 27. Being her Birthday/ then 5 years old/ Bernard Lens Junj[sic] Fecit/ 1717/8, turned and stained ivorine frame.

    The sale at Christie's on 2 November 1971 featured a total of fifteen portraits of the Whitmore family painted between the years 1718-1731 (lots 115-129) and this series included individual portraits of the Whitmore children; Elizabeth (1710-1735), featured in the loan Exhibition, 'Childhood' at Sotheby's, 2 - 27 January 1988, (no.113); Thomas (1711-1773), sold Christie's, 2 June 2009, (lot 225); Ann, portrayed in the present lot; William, aged four (see lot 11); Richard, aged three, (1715-before 1736), Victoria & Albert Museum, inv. no.P.13-1971; George, aged one (1717-1775); Charles, aged one (see lot 12); Roger, aged one month, Institut Néerlandais, Paris, and again, aged three (see lot 13); John, aged two (see lot 14); Katherine, aged two (1722-1800), Victoria & Albert Museum, inv. no.P.14-1971 and Henry, aged one (1723-1796). The artist's portrait of their father, William Whitmore (1682-1725) and that of his wife, Elizabeth Pope with Charles as a baby appeared at these salerooms on 25 November 2009 (both as lot 11).

    William Whitmore succeeded to the Apley Estates upon the death of Sir William Whitmore, the second and last baronet, in 1699. He was on the roll of Freemen in 1705 and sat as Whig MP for Bridgnorth between 1705-1710 and 1713-1725. William married Elizabeth Pope of Wolstanton in 1707. As well as the children painted by Lens, the Whitmores had another son, William (1709-1710) who died in infancy. All of their children were baptised at Astley Abbotts Parish Church, near Bridgnorth and close to Apley Park.
