  Also known as Ik zal u niet begeven, ik zal u niet verlaten, which translates as "I will not forsake you, I will not leave you", the present lot is a preliminary study for the left-hand side panel of the Women's Memorial in Bloemfontein. The Memorial was designed by van Wouw and Pretoria architect, Frans Soff, to commemorate the 27,000 Boer women and children who died in British concentration camps during the Anglo-Boer conflict. The panel depicts a scene in one of these camps, although several compositional changes were made to the final design. A photograph in the collection of the City Council of Pretoria helps us date the bas-relief panel to 1910. The monument itself was unveiled on 16 December 1913, to an audience of 20,000.

• Provenance should read: Collection of Professor Murray Schoonraad. Thence by direct descent to the present owner. Prof. Murray Schoonraad played an important role in the establishment of the Art Archives, a research and documentation centre for South African art at the University of Pretoria, where he lectured in history of art. It is not known where he acquired the present lot but it was not directly from the artist as stated in the catalogue. In 1985 Schoonraad was responsible for casting a similar bronze for the University at the Renzo Vignali Artistic foundry, which is still in the UP collection.
