PROVENANCE Friedrich Prinz zu Solms-Baruth, brother-in-law of the artist Purchased from the above by the current owner
This lot is accompanied by a copy of a letter, dated April 2012, from artist's son, Frederick Henry Lewis, authenticating the work.
Born in Cape Town, Neville Lewis studied at the Slade School in London 1914-16 and was heavily influenced by the work of Sir Augustus John (1878-1961). He served in the British army in France and Italy 1916-18, after which he took a studio in London 1919-1938, where he forged his career as a portrait painter. He was appointed an Official War Artist 1940-1943, and after the war settled near Stellenbosch, where the present lot was painted in the late 1940s.
