Pieter Willem Frederick Wenning (South African, 1873-1921)
A street scene in the Malay Quarter, Cape Town signed 'Wenning' (lower right) oil on panel 38.1 x 27.8cm (15 x 10 15/16in).
Footnotes
Wenning painted another version of this work, Street in the Malay Quarter Capetown, which is illustrated in Alexander (1962, p.17) and Wenning (1976, p.88) and helps us date the work to around the time of the Influenza Epidemic in 1918-1919:
"He went for his usual visits to the Malay Quarter, to sketch or to paint. The streets were absolutely deserted, and he said it was at that time that he painted what I consider to be one of his most attractive works, a street scene in the Malay Quarter. He told me there was not a soul in sight and that all he saw whilst he was painting was a stray dog, obviously starved, that kept him company whilst he was at work." (Wenning, 1976, p.87)
