English born Gordon Daniel Brown was a club maker and an early gutty ball maker, inventing the Brown's Patent golf ball. He was also one of the eight entrants in the first Open Championship in 1860. In 1861 he was renting Hugh Philp's golf shop in Pilmour Links. By 1866, this property had been bought by Tom Morris who in 1867 was advertising that he had acquired all of G.D. Brown's stock.
