Footnotes

  • Emerging from the same scene that produced art world megastars Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat, Lee Quinones is now widely recognised as one of the most influential graffiti artists of the era. Quinones displayed artistic talent from a young age, and began spray painting in his mid-teens. By the late 1970s he was already a well-known, if rather elusive and mythical, figure in the world of subway car painting and tagging, and not much later he became one of the first graffiti artists to make the move to painting on canvas and exhibiting in commercial 'high-art' galleries. His work is now held in the permanent collection of the Whitney in New York, and was included in the already legendary Art in the Streets exhibition at MoCA in 2011.
