A pair of six-fold screens, in ink and colour on a gold-leaf ground, the right screen depicting an adult shishi and two offspring playfully frolicking beneath pines, the left screen depicting an adult with three cubs beside peonies growing from behind rocks, both screens signed Hogen Shunmei sei with two seals. 173.5cm x 343cm (68¼in x 135in).   • Born and working in Niigata, Igarashi Shunmei was a Kano School painter. He was a pupil of Kano Ryoshin and then studied the Tosa and Chinese Song-style of painting in Kyoto. He used the go (art name) Go Shunmei for a short time whilst he was middle aged and was awarded the titles of Hokkyo and Hogen later in his life. He specialized in landscapes, figures and flower paintings.

27.5% on the first £2,500 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £2,500 up to and including £300,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £300,000 up to and including £3,000,000;
and 13.9% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £3,000,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
