Footnotes

  • One of Britain's top six motor manufacturers prior to WWI, the Wolverhampton-based Star Motor Company had produced its first automobile in 1898. Although technically un-adventurous in its early years, Star built up a deserved reputation for building luxuriously appointed and well constructed cars, aided by the fact that it made most of its parts, chassis frames excepted, in house. Four-wheel brakes and overhead valves made their appearance in the early 1920s and then in 1925 came the first overhead-valve six, the 20/50hp PL2, which was joined in the early 1930s by a 2.1-litre 14hp ohv six: the Comet Fourteen (also known as the 'Little Comet'). Guy Motors had acquired Star in 1927 and the firm changed hands again in 1932, but by then the ongoing economic downturn was hitting luxury car manufacturers hard and by 1935 Star was gone.

A rare surviving example of Star's smallest six, this Comet Fourteen was first registered in London on 31st December 1931. Noteworthy features include twin side-mounted spare wheels, a sunroof and sun visor. In long-term ownership from the 1960s to the 1990s, having apparently been off the road in storage for some time, it was restored circa 1994 by a previous owner. 'WAS 396' was purchased by the vendor at Bonhams' Harrogate sale in November 2006 (Lot 392) and is described as in working order and excellent – though not concours – condition. The car is offered with old-style logbook, Swansea V5C document and a portfolio of interesting Star-related literature.

Saleroom notices

  • Please note there is no V5C Registration Certificate with this vehicle, only the old log-book. Whilst positioning the Star we noted the engine has a knocking sound.
