Footnotes

  • Although it is registered as an Excalibur, it is not known which of the two motor manufacturers of that name was responsible for this car, which is believed to be a 'one off'. The eponymous British kit-car maker seems most likely, though this vehicle bears no resemblance either to their Jaguar XJ13 replica or their pretty Crusader coupé. Although crafted in an approximation of pre-war style, it is highly unlikely to be the work of designer Brooks Stevens' US-based Excalibur company, whose modern Mercedes-Benz SSK lookalikes are highly prized. Owners of the latter include famous celebrities such as Bill Cosby, Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, Dick Van Dyke, Tony Curtis, Sonny & Cher, Dean Martin, Jackie Gleason, Phyllis Diller and King Juan Carlos of Spain. Finished in cream/red with matching leather interior, the car is powered by a 4.7-litre V8 engine driving via automatic transmission, and is described as in generally good condition, running and driving well. The current vendor knows nothing of its prior history. A guaranteed head-turner wherever it goes, the car is offered with old-style logbook, Swansea V5 document and fresh MoT.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge what is known as a Buyer's Premium. Buyer's Premium on all Automobilia lots will adhere to Bonhams group policy:

25% up to £50,000 of hammer price,
20% from £50,001 to £1,000,000 of hammer price,
and 12% on the balance thereafter. This applies to each lot purchased and is subject to VAT.

For Motor Cars and Motorcycles a 15% Buyer's Premium is payable on the first £50,000 of the final Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on any amount by which the Hammer Price exceeds £50,000. VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.

Some lots may be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price. These lots will be clearly marked with the relevant symbol printed beside the lot number in the catalog.
