£ 1,200 - 1,500
US$ 1,500 - 1,900
MOORE, GEORGE (1852-1933, Irish writer and poet)
AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT OF HIS POEM 'BALLAD OF LOVERS', signed ('George Moore'), 28 lines, with a photocopy of the text as printed in The Morning Post in [1933] and a typed letter signed from the Post returning the manuscript to Mrs Julie Daniell, 3 pages, octavo [1933]

Love lost in autumn wintry gloaming, Like reveller that meets a bier
Heard hollow voic'd chants entombing The roses withering and sere:
A West wind shed them there and here, Paving the crimson Snow each bower,
And love wept bitterly for fear
Is there a blossom to break the flower...

Mrs Daniel, daughter of Linda Samuel Myers, said by her to be a friend of Moore, wrote in the newspaper: 'The enclosed verses...were written over half a century ago by the late Mr George Moore. He was a great friend of my late father...I have had the verses in my possession for many years, and used occasionally to chaff Mr George Moore about them, but he always said that he was no poet.'

RARE: no poetical manuscripts by George Moore have been sold at auction in the last forty years at least. The poem is listed by Gilcher as printed in The Morning Post and later in Études Anglaises (Paris), 1978. George Moore's papers are largely in American libraries and the National Library of Ireland.
