With browned twist octagonal sighted barrel signed in gold on the top flat at the breech (signature partly worn, minor rust patination) and rifled with eight grooves, case-hardened breech with platinum line, engraved foliate border and gold-lined touch-hole, case-hardened bayonet fitting with engraved foliate border, and signed border engraved pan-lock secured by a screw and with rainproof pan and roller (some wear and rust patination, the steel an old replacement), border engraved case-hardened breech mount and tang, the latter finely engraved with a martial trophy and foliage, flat detented lock and cock en suite (safety-catch repaired), highly figured butt and fore-end, the former with chequered grip, flattened on the underside of the butt in the manner of John Manton, and with cheek-piece, the latter with silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, horn fore-end cap, and incorporating the pineapple finial (minor repair) of the trigger-plate, blued steel mounts comprising scroll trigger-guard and butt-plate decorated en suite with the lock, gold escutcheon engraved with owner's initial 'G', a ducal coronet above, sling mounts, stirrup ramrod, and much original finish: in its lined and fitted mahogany case (compartment lid repaired) with some accessories including later powder-flask with bag-shaped body covered in pigskin and inscribed 'Gordon rifle' (almost certainly for Charles Gordon), the interior of the lid with maker's trade label for 1802-1814, the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle engraved 'John Hay Mackenzie Esqr. of Cromertie', and complete with its original leather travelling cover, London proof marks
