Footnotes

  • Frank Watson Wood was born in Berwick-on-Tweed in 1862 and studied there at the School of Art. In 1900 he moved to Portsmouth. It was here he began to paint the Navy and received many commissions from officers wishing to have portraits of their ships and naval exercises recorded.
In 1918 he was invited with William Wyllie and John Lavery aboard the Grand Fleet flagship H.M.S Queen Elizabeth, to cover the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet after the signing of the Armistice on the 11 November 1918.
Primarily considered a watercolourist, this painting may be considered one of the masterpieces of his career.
