The ex-Bernard Darniche/Alain Mahè, Rally Tour de Corse-winning,
1977 FIAT 131 Abarth Group 4 Rally Car
Chassis no. 131AR2045674
Launched at the 1976 Geneva Salon, the 131 Abarth replaced the 124 Spider Abarth as FIAT's frontline rally-car, its arrival marking the start of an upturn in the Milanese marque's fortunes on the world stage. Like the Spider, the 131 Abarth was another 400-off, Group 4 'homologation special' and made use of the independent rear suspension system developed on its forbear. The twin-cam, sixteen-valve engine produced 140bhp in Weber-carbureted road trim and 225bhp on Kugelfischer fuel injection as installed in the competition Rallye derivative. The 131 Abarth scored a single World Championship victory in its 1976 debut season before triumphing against the mighty works Ford Escorts the following year to bring FIAT its first World Championship of Makes. The 131 Abarth repeated the trick in 1978 and 1980, works driver Walter Röhrl winning the Drivers' title that year, thus establishing it as the dominant rally-car of the late 1970s.
Originally registered 'TO P35976' in Turin, this ex-works FIAT 131 Abarth was first raced by Marrku Alen/Ilkka Kivimaki in the Sveitsin Rally in 1977 and contested two further events that year: the Rally of 1000 Lakes, driven by Hannu Valtaharju/Miikka Anttila and the Rally Portugal with Fulvio Bacchelli/Francesco Rossetti. It was then used as a reserve car (muletto) by the works team in 1978 at the Alitalia Rally di Monte Carlo (for Maurizio Verini/Francesco Rossetti) and the Rally Tour de Corse (for Bernard Darniche/Alain Mahè). After that event the 131 was sold by the FIAT team directly to a private customer.
The car comes with ASI Certificate and a dossier of documented history including its original FIAT Auto 'Foglio Complementare', a copy photograph of it in action on the 1977 Rally Portugal, Swiss customs paid document and a copy of the Italian classic car magazine 'Automobilismo d'Epoca' (February 2006 edition) featuring it on the front cover. A rare opportunity to acquire an ex-works Group 4 rally car with in period World Championship history.
