1976 Ferrari 308GTB Vetroresina Berlinetta
Coachwork by Pininfarina
Chassis no. 19755
The 308GTB offered here has lighter glassfibre (vetroresina) bodywork and dry-sump lubrication of the very first cars produced, which are the most sought after by enthusiasts today.
Introduced at the Paris Salon in 1975, the stunningly beautiful 308GTB – Ferrari's second V8-engined road car - marked a welcome return to Pininfarina styling following the Bertone-designed Dino 308GT4. The newcomer had changed little mechanically, retaining its predecessor's underpinnings and four-cam, 3.0-litre V8 engine, whose 255bhp was good enough to propel the 308GTB to a top speed of 240km/h (150mph).
Produced initially with dry sump lubrication and glassfibre (vetroresina) bodywork - the first time this material had been used for a production Ferrari - the Scaglietti-built 308GTB used steel after April 1977. The change brought with it a considerable weight penalty and consequent reduction in performance, as well as an increased susceptibility to corrosion. Naturally, anyone wanting to race a 308GTB started out with the vetroresina version if they could. Further developments included the introduction of an open-top GTS version with Targa-style removable roof, the adoption of Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection (1980) and, finally, revised cylinder heads with four valves per cylinder (1982).
One of only 712 vetroresina 308GTB coupés produced, chassis number '19755' was purchased by the current private vendor at Bonhams Monaco auction in 2004 when it was offered for sale by an enthusiastic local collector (only its second owner) whose commitments left him insufficient time to enjoy it. The 308GTB had approximately 20,000 kilometres recorded on the odometer at time of purchase. Restored in 2005, the car has been expertly maintained by a renowned Italian Ferrari specialist and has covered only a further 3,000 kilometres since the rebuild. It was repainted four years ago and has a new exhaust. Finished in Giallo Fly (yellow) with black leather interior, the car is described by the vendor as in generally excellent condition and offered with sundry restoration invoices and Monaco registration papers for the most appropriate plate, 'F308'. A wonderful opportunity to acquire a restored example of this most desirable version of the iconic 308GTB.
