Footnotes

  • ARCHBISHOP JOHN WHITGIFT'S COPY, inscribed in an elegant hand at the head of the first title "Ex dono Joannis Whitgifti Arcbupis: Cantuar". Whitgift (d.1604) was the last Archbishop to have known pre-Reformation England, and had an uncle who was the abbot of an Augustinian house. During the reign of Mary he kept a low profile at Peterhouse, later moving to Trinity College, and afterwards the See of Worcester, before being appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. He was the target of the authors of the Marprelate Tracts. See illustration overleaf.
