* 1,100cc Fiat in-line four-cylinder
* 4-speed manual transmission
* Incredible aerodynamic styling
* The essence of post-war Italian motorsport
* All the thrill of a Cisitalia at a fraction of the cost

The brilliant success of Piero Dusio's Cisitalia D46 single-seater racers in the early years after World War II contributed enormously to the rebirth of motorsport in Italy following the devastation of the conflict. Fiat-based, as were most Italian specials and small production competition cars immediately preceding and following the war, they found great supporters among the top drivers of the day, including the legendary Tazio Nuvolari.

These first vehicles of the 'Compagnie Industriale Sportivo Italia', or 'Cisitalia', were based on the Fiat 500 'Topolino'. Utilizing the chassis, front suspension and steering box of the diminutive and ground-breaking little Fiat, combined with the 1,100cc 4-cylinder engine used in the mid-range sedans, superb handling, light cars with an excellent power to weight ratio were created. That the design was laid out by the great Dante Giacosa, father of the Topolino, ensured that the engineering behind them was sound. Dusio also employed the brilliant aerodynamicist and designer Giovanni Savonuzzi, who developed the D46 for production.

As Dusio expanded into road racing cars, Savonuzzi styled the Cisitalia 202 MM Aerodinamico in 1946. A sleek, dramatically shaped coupe, it was the next step in themes first developed in pre-war streamlined racers. The most notable feature were the large fins at the rear, which seemed to grow organically from the fender line as it swept from headlights through the doors on the way to the low, tapered tail. The original Savonuzzi Coupe Aerodinamco is a rare and costly item, certainly valued into the middle six-figure range. It is not surprising that replicas have been built. On the surface, the recipe is a simple one -build a chassis, copy the general shape of the Cisitalia and finish with a Fiat 4-cylinder engine. In considering this example, it becomes abundantly clear that this car has been carefully and artfully designed and built by craftsmen of great talent. Unlike most replicas, the proportions of the body are excellent, appearing as does the original. The details are also impressive, including the steering wheel, door hardware, grille and under the hood, even the panel seams. This coupe is powered, as the originals, by a Fiat 1,100 engine, here fitted with twin side draft carburetors. The power output is not known, but the simple and light bodywork will allow spirited driving in just about any circumstances.

While not a candidate for international-level concours and competition events, this lovely coupe would be quite enjoyable on local rallies and tours, or just for fun blasts through the countryside, with sensations of the Targa Florio or Mille Miglia flooding the mind. The new owner will certainly find a great deal of pleasure from driving this evocative car for a fraction of the cost of the genuine article and almost certainly for less than the cost it took to build it.
