1960 Fiat Multipla 600 Taxi
Chassis no. 100108074075
The Fiat 500 was the car that put Italy back on wheels follow WWII. The venerable rear engined, rear wheel drive platform was a Beetle-Lite, the antithesis of the Austin Mini that came out a few later. Numerous derivatives were built off of the original version, with engines slowly increasing in capacity.

This example was ordered new for the commercial market, serving as a taxi in Roma for seven years. In the winter of 1967, a couple from Chicago, at the start of their month-long honeymoon, were stranded in Rome by the country-wide strike on the railway system and bought this taxi as a means of getting around the country. Following the little car’s month of successful service, the couple decided they couldn’t just leave it in Italy, so arrangements were made to bring the car to the City of Broad Shoulders. After much hard work and investment, the car finally made it to the Windy City in the fall of 1969, where it resided with this couple for the next 35 years.

In 2005, feeling themselves no longer able to use and car for their little Fiat as much as someone else, it was sold to Southern California. While there it was given a sympathetic reconditioning to ensure continued reliability as well as preservations of its previous 50 years of use. The drivetrain, electrical system, brakes and suspension were all rebuilt and overhauled, the taxi meter was reconditioned along with other taxi features, and even a few of the dents were repaired. The work was completed in June of 2010.

The vendor acquired this car shortly after the restoration. As with most professional cars, few have survived, especially in this condition, making this a rare and unique opportunity to acquire a quirky bit of Italian history!
