Footnotes

  • AC Cars Ltd. of Ferry Works, Thames Ditton, were headed from 1921 to 1929 by pioneer motorist, racing driver and arch-self publicist, S F Edge. Writing of the 12hp 'Royal', Edge referred to 'its graceful lines and beautiful finish ..... the appearance, comfort, speed, reliability, durability and general efficiency of cars selling at many times the AC price; it combines these virtues with less running costs per mile than any car in the world of its speed and road performance.' Edge's eulogising was probably well justified, the 'Royal' being a well engineered car with a four-cylinder, three bearing, monobloc engine, driving through a flat plate clutch to a three-speed gearbox with worm final drive. Cantilever suspension provided excellent passenger comforts for the four passengers riding in the snug two front seats and slightly more exposed dickey.

This car, well known in AC circles, was first registered in March 1925 but complies with the 1924 catalogue specification, being fitted from new with the genuine Anzani engine which Edge plagiarised in January 1925. The front wheel brakes were an optional, but essential, extra. The first owner was AC specialist and authorised agent Hillier, Hollam & Co.Ltd. Old buff logbooks record multi-ownership from 1935 to 1963 and the car's history in preservation commences when the car was restored in 1964-1965. The car's subsequent history and maintenance record is exceptionally well documented in detailed files which a prospective buyer is advised to inspect. The vendor advises that the engine runs well and the radiator was re-cored by specialist Tony Wilder in 2010. Coachwork, liveried in red with good black leather upholstery, is very sound although the hood is showing its age. The wheels were blast cleaned, painted and new tyres fitted in 2009 and the 12volt CAV electrics were rewired in recent years by the previous owner, at which time new rubber divers helmet lamps were fitted. This charming, sporting and highly original vintage light car comes with much AC documentation, old tax discs, the vendor's VSCC buff form, tools and spares, including a magneto, and a Swansea V5C registration document.
