The car offered here is an example of the Amilcar Model G, produced from 1925 to 1927, which was the French company's most popular touring model. The Model G's 1,100cc engine was similar to that of the sporting CGS but in a lower state of tune, while at 8' 6" the wheelbase was some 8" longer than the sports car's.
Probably fitted with two-seater drophead coupé coachwork, chassis number '71946' was exported new to Australia where a total restoration and upgrading was carried out in the late 1980s. Constructed of aluminium panels on a timber frame, the three-seat, 'cloverleaf' torpedo bodywork, reminiscent of the contemporary racing Delage, has been executed by Richard Stanley to a very high standard, while the seats are upholstered in the finest Howe Australian leather with matching tan carpets and trim. The black paintwork is Glazurit two-pack, which has stood the test of time very well and still looks superb.
The Amilcar engine was built up by Ruggero Giannini and adapted to use a Riley Nine crankshaft, special aluminium con-rods, new camshaft (to the original design) and an aluminium cylinder head by Comalco Aluminium Ltd of Australia where Ruggero was Head of Research. New white metal main bearings and new carriers were made while the pistons, valves, valve springs, etc were manufactured to suit and an external cartridge-type oil filter incorporated. The ignition system was converted to battery/coil and the clutch and three-speed gearbox left standard.
In 2001 the Amilcar was brought to the UK and later passed into the hands of its current enthusiast owner, forming part of a stable of Vintage sports cars all kept in immaculate condition and used for VSCC events, in this case often by the owner's equally enthusiastic daughter. Since acquisition the fuel tank has been fitted with a top-filler to make filling easier; flashing indicators have been installed; the engine tuned and the brakes adjusted. We are advised that the Amilcar's performance and handling are extremely good and its reliability has been demonstrated by regular gentle use.
One of the prettiest in the world, this delightful little Amilcar incorporates sensible modifications to enhance its usability, affording the prospect of reliable and exciting motoring as well as great potential in Vintage competition.
