One of the most successful examples of 'retro' styling in recent years, the Jaguar S-Type revived the name of an illustrious forebear while its lines recalled those of the classic Mk2 saloon of 1959. Styled by Jaguar's head of design, Geoff Lawson, and introduced for 1999, the S-Type was aimed squarely at the market sector contested by the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series. 3.0-litre V6 and 4.0-litre V8 petrol engines were the only ones available initially, a 2.5-litre V6 and 4.2-litre V8 being added in 2002 and a 2.7-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel option in 2004. Jaguar's traditional characteristics of excellent handling and superb ride quality were emphatically restated in the S-Type, making it perfect for racking up the motorway miles in supreme comfort. As one would expect of a car of this class, it was also generously equipped: alloy wheels, climate control, multiple airbags, electrically adjustable driver's seat, heated door mirrors, automatic headlights, trip computer and traction control all being offered as standard. CATS active suspension was optional, and standard on the supercharged V8 'R' version.
