Footnotes

  • Rootes' bold challenge to the all-conquering Mini was announced in 1960, commencing manufacture at the Group's new Linwood factory in 1963. The Imp's design, by British standards, was as revolutionary as that of the Mini and placed the all-alloy engine/transmission package at the rear of the car. With only 875cc to play with, performance was adequate if not inspiring, 80mph being manageable under favourable conditions. There was also a van version, marketed as a Commer from its introduction in November 1965 and Hillman from October 1968 until the end of production in July 1970. Designed to carry a 5cwt (350kg) payload, the Imp van featured a slightly de-tuned engine, larger clutch, up-rated driveshafts and stronger (12"x4"J) wheels. In 1968 an Imp van cost £441 plus purchase tax, while a passenger seat and windscreen washers were classed as 'extras'.
Believed purchased for the collection circa 2001, in which year it featured in 'Classic Van' magazine (article available) this Imp van was last taxed for the road in 2002. Remote central locking, an alarm/immobiliser, tracker and a modern radio are the only notified deviations from factory specification. There are no documents with this Lot, which is offered without reserve.
