Sold for £ 5,625 (US$ 7,292) inc. premium
IRELAND (WILLIAM HENRY)
CARION (JOHANNES) The Thre Bokes of Cronicles... whyche was never afore prynted in Englysh, black letter, numerous historiated initials, a number of manuscript notes in English in a strictly contemporary hand (mostly picking up reformation issues, e.g. on fol. xxiii "they thought Images and contrefaitures to bee God" contradicted), later notes [by W.H. Ireland] purporting to be by Shakespeare, including several signatures and some longer notes, minor defects affecting letters and a few words, cut into in places, first and last leaves with margins renewed, apparently lacking NN8 (probably blank, conforming to that on EEBO), late anonymous bookplate (per chevron argent and azure, a lion rampart countercharged, crest of bear's paw holding a sprig of apples), label of [George Arthur] Williams of Cheltenham (bookseller, proprietor of circulating library, fl. 1822-30), eighteenth century green morocco, lettered as with Shakespere's notes, modern cloth case, [STC 4626], 4to, [S. Mierdman] for Gwalter Lynne, 1550
