Footnotes

  • A REWARD FOR AN IRISH INFORMER. Reynolds had joined the United Irishmen early in 1797 and, according to his own account, only discovered their ambition of seizing Dublin by force of arms in February 1798. Through an intermediary, he was invited to betray his associates and act as principal witness at their trial in return for a pension of £1000 a year and £5000 in hand, with permission to settle anywhere in England. Until the trial, he took refuge in Dublin Castle: 'After the suppression of the rebellion, Reynolds emerged from his quarters in the castle and took a house in Leinster Street. By the influence of government he was on 15 October made free of the guild of merchants of Dublin, and on 19 October received the freedom of the city. However, following an attack on his house, he moved to England' (Robert Dunlop, revised by Gerard McCoy, ODNB, where a fuller account is given). Included in the lot is a printed bifolium, and duplicate, setting out Reynolds's services, and referring to the present Freedom. The Government thereafter, however, did its best to have as little to do with him and his family as possible.
