FIAT's first post-WWI six-cylinder car, the Tipo 510 was also the Italian manufacturer's largest model at the time of its introduction in 1919. The 501's 3,446cc sidevalve engine was carried in a chassis of 3,400mm wheelbase equipped with a four-speed gearbox and (initially) rear-wheel brakes only. Twelve months after the 510's introduction the 510S sports version appeared boasting an engine of identical capacity but with raised compression ratio, which increased the maximum output from 46 to 53bhp, good enough for a top speed of around 96km/h (60mph). Of shorter (3,100mm) wheelbase, the 510S was readily distinguishable from its progenitor by the V-shaped radiator, similar windscreen and the absence of running boards.
In the vendor's private collection since the early 1980s and partially restored in 1985, this 510S is described as very original and in good working order in all respects, starting 'on the button' on a recent visit. The owner has taken part in many historic events organised by his local car club in northern Italy, including a trip to Prague some four years ago when the car performed faultlessly. It should be noted that the front axle has been changed to allow the provision of front brakes, as it is illegal to operate a car without front brakes in Italy. Boasting elegant factory Torpedo coachwork with disappearing hood-frame, this landmark FIAT sporting car is offered with ASI certificate and proof that EU taxes have been paid.

La première six cylindres construite après première guerre mondiale par Fiat, la Tipo 510, était aussi le plus gros modèle du constructeur italien au moment de sa présentation, en 1919. Le moteur à soupapes latérales de 3 446 cm3 de la 510 reposait sur un châssis de 3,40 m d’empattement équipé d’une boîte à quatre rapports et (au début) de freins aux roues arrière uniquement. Douze mois après la présentation de la 510, la 510 S, sa version sportive, voyait le jour avec un moteur de même cylindrée mais au taux de compression augmenté qui portait la puissance maximale de 46 à 53 ch donnant une vitesse maximale d’environ 96 km/h. Bâtie sur empattement plus court (3,10 m), la 510 S était facilement identifiable de sa devancière par son radiateur en V, un pare-brise du même type et l’absence de marchepied.
Dans la collection du vendeur depuis le début des années 1980 et partiellement restaurée en 1985, cette 510 S est décrite comme particulièrement originale et en très bon état de marche à tous point de vue, démarrant « sur une pression du bouton », lors d’une récente visite. Le vendeur a pris part à de nombreux événements historiques organisés par son club local du nord de l’Italie, y compris une excursion à Prague il y a quatre ans, au cours de laquelle la voiture fonctionna parfaitement. Il faut noter que l’essieu avant a été changé pour permettre l’installation de freins avant, puisqu’il est illégal de conduire une voiture sans freins avant en Italie. Équipée d’une élégante carrosserie torpedo d’usine avec une capote escamotable, cette Fiat sportive historique est vendue avec ses certificats ASI et est dédouanée UE.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge what is known as a Buyer's Premium. Buyer's Premium on all Automobilia lots will adhere to Bonhams group policy:

25% up to £50,000 of hammer price,
20% from £50,001 to £1,000,000 of hammer price,
and 12% on the balance thereafter. This applies to each lot purchased and is subject to VAT.
