Introduced in 1950, the Standard Vanguard-engined Plus 4 represented a major step forward in the evolution of the Morgan sports car. Although the traditional chassis layout was retained - what else would one expect from Morgan? – the frame underwent extensive alteration, gaining in both wheelbase and track dimensions while being considerably strengthened. The centrally mounted Moss gearbox was carried over from the 4/4. A few years later – in 1953 – Morgan began the process of updating the car's appearance, which culminated in the arrival of the quintessential Morgan look in 1954.
One unfortunate consequence of the 2,088cc Vanguard engine's adoption was the fact that it placed the Plus 4 in the over-2-litre class for racing purposes, forcing it to compete against rivals of much larger capacity. As a result, the 1,991cc Triumph TR engine was made available from 1953, this more-powerful option being preferred by most customers. In 1956 the revised TR3 power unit began to be phased in, offering 100bhp and making the Plus 4 'the cheapest 100mph car made in Britain' according to The Motor magazine. Around 1961, Plus 4s began to leave the Malvern factory fitted with the 2,138cc TR4 engine and from 1965 with the 104bhp TR4A unit, the latter cars representing the Triumph-engined Morgan in its ultimate form.
This Triumph-engined Plus 4 was bought from Harpers in the UK in 2001. The copy UK V5 registration document records one Paul Jaye of Eversholt, Buckinghamshire as the immediately preceding owner and notes that the imported vehicle had been used/registered overseas prior to registration in the UK in 1999. Restored by the vendor and completed in 2009, the car is offered with sundry restoration photographs and Spanish registration papers.

Introduite en 1950, la Plus 4 à moteur Standard Vanguard, représenta un pas en avant important dans l’évolution des Morgan de sport. Si la configuration traditionnelle du châssis était conservée – qu’attendre d’autre chez Morgan ? - le cadre fut néanmoins très modifié et les voie et empattement agrandis, outre un renforcement général. La boîte Moss montée au centre de la 4/4 fut conservée. En 1953, Morgan commença à faire évoluer l’aspect extérieur de la voiture, évolution qui culmina en 1954 avec l’introduction de la face avant désormais inséparable de la Morgan.
Une conséquence négative de l’adoption du moteur Vanguard de 2,088 cm3 fut son classement en catégorie « plus de 2 litres » des Plus 4 de compétition, ce qui obligea à courir contre des machines de cylindrée supérieure. Le moteur Triumph de 1,991 cm3 fut donc proposé en 1953 et cette option plus puissante fut choisie par de nombreux acquéreurs. En 1956, le moteur TR3 révisé et porté à 100 cv commença à entrer en production, faisant de la Plus 4 « la voiture 160 km/h la moins chère en Grande-Bretagne » d’après le magazine The Motor. Vers 1961, les Plus 4 commencèrent à être livrées avec le moteur TR4 de 2,138 cm3 et, à partir de 1965, avec le groupe TR4A de 104 cv, ces dernières voitures représentant l’ultime version des Morgan à moteur Triumph.
Cette Plus 4 à moteur Triumph fut achetée chez Harpers au Royaume-Uni en 2001. La copie du document d’immatriculation au Royaume-Uni V5 indique un certain Paul Jaye d’Eversholt (Buckinghamshire) comme étant le propriétaire immédiatement précédent et précise que ce véhicule importé a été utilisé/immatriculé à l’étranger avant son immatriculation au Royaume-Uni en 1999. Restaurée par le vendeur et achevée en 2009, la voiture est accompagnée d’un copieux dossier de photos de la restauration et de ses papiers d’immatriculation espagnols.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge what is known as a Buyer's Premium. Buyer's Premium on all Automobilia lots will adhere to Bonhams group policy:

25% up to £50,000 of hammer price,
20% from £50,001 to £1,000,000 of hammer price,
and 12% on the balance thereafter. This applies to each lot purchased and is subject to VAT.

For Motor Cars and Motorcycles a 15% Buyer's Premium is payable on the first £50,000 of the final Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on any amount by which the Hammer Price exceeds £50,000. VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.

Some lots may be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price. These lots will be clearly marked with the relevant symbol printed beside the lot number in the catalogue.
