A Greene's Patent British Type breechloading carbine with apparent U.S. surcharge
Serial no. 1697, .54 caliber. Standard British type with 16 inch barrel, crown and VR on lock, issue/inspection marks and with condemned/obsolete double broad arrow at breech end of barrel. Oil-finished buttstock, the left side stamped U.S. below the comb.
Condition: Very good. Retaining much of an older reblued finish, mainly on the forward portion of barrel and on the action. Fine bore. Stock with few scattered marks, some fading and remains of tape by patchbox.

  • Note: Some 2000 examples were purchased by the British government for use during the Crimean War but saw little use. Most were destroyed and stripped for parts. It is said some were purchased by the U.S. government for use during the Civil War but this appears to be unsubstantiated.
