An English silver-hilted hanger
late 17th/early 18th century
The 19 1/2 inch slightly curved, single edged German blade struck on both sides with the king's head mark of Solingen maker Johannes Wundes, one side also inlaid with the figure of a dagger in fire-blued copper. Silver hilt comprising recurved quillon, the spherical terminal molded on either side with a crown; flat quillon block chased with leafage above and below at the quillon and knucklebow junctures; knucklebow with central panel molded with simple figure of standing warrior with shield and spear and with crowns above and below, the terminal molded with foliage; ferrule molded with single band; flat, grooved iron pommel cap, the top with simple silver inlay. One-piece staghorn grip. Later leather scabbard.
