Footnotes

  • In the publication, Malermonogramme. 15. bis 17. Jahrhundert, by F. Subert and I. Subertova-Kucerova, the monogram 'HG' (or 'HC') is identified as the signature of the Antwerp artist, Willem van Herp (Prague, 1988, no. 454). Thieme-Backer, however, identified a group of works, traditionally ascribed to van Herp but characterised by figures on a greater scale, as the output of an unidentifiable artist sharing initials with the Antwerp genre painter, for whom they suggested the name of the 'Pseudo Herp'. More recently Fred Meijer pinpoints a small number of interior scenes, relatively close to van Herp's work and stylistically coherent with them, which he re-grouped under the name of the 'Monogrammist H.C.'. For comparison, see: Figures brawling in an interior at the Museum Bredius, Den Haag (inv. no. 214-1946, previously attributed to Pieter Codde); A village kermesse (Piasa, Paris, 25 June 2004, lot 83, as Joos van Craesbeeck) and The King drinks (Bonhams, London 9 July 2008, lot 83, as Wilem van Herp).
