Footnotes

  • The above chair related to a carved giltwood chair of uncertain English/Italian origin from the collection of The Lady Lever Art Gallery illustrated in L.Wood, The Upholstered Furniture in The Lady Lever Art Gallery, Vol.II, London 2008, item 79. The Lady Lever chair and that offered here both form part of a small group of related seat furniture including a suite which was at Beningbrough in Yorkshire when occupied by the 10th Earl Chesterfield and which included a settee (see L.Wood, op.cit., p.811, fig 491). Another similar suite was at Hever Castle, Kent. There are numerous differences in carving and decoration between the examples in this group, the example here is furthermore unusual in that it is polished walnut and not giltwood. Lucy wood discusses the debate over the dating of the chairs and other examples that have appeared on the market in recent years being described at George I or George II while some as George I style, some being clearly of English origin some possibly of Italian origin (L.Wood, op.cit., p.809-815)/
