Footnotes

  • Note: The 44th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment were a 'nine month' regiment who entered camp on August 29, 1862. In October they were transported by boat to New Berne, North Carolina where they helped build Camp Stevenson. They participated in the Tarboro Campaign in November. They were engaged in the battles of Kinston, Whitehall and Goldsboro, all in December of 1862. Participated in the brief Plymouth Expedition and then returned to Little Washington and spent the rest of their service in the entrenchments there. It evidently rained nearly the whole time they were in North Carolina and their time spent coping with mud and boredom is typical of many soldier's experiences.
