A George I giltwood pier mirror
In the manner of John Gumley
The elaborate arched foliate-scrolled cresting centred by an applied engraved glass roundel with a stylised plume beneath, the divided central plates conforming shaped and with serpentine apron decorated with a further plume motif and flanked by conforming scrolls, the engraved and bevelled margin plates headed by composite captials and partially framed by gadrooned mouldings regilded and the central plates possibly replaced, 102cm wide, 203cm high (40in wide, 79.5in high).

  • Provenance: purchased by the vendor from Partridge PLC, New Bond Street, London during the 1960s.

    A pair of related George I giltwood pier mirrors with the maker's name 'GUMLEY', which share features such as the gadrooned frame mouldings, composite margin-plate capitals and plume motifs form part of the Royal Collection at Hampton Court (see Christopher Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1996, p. 252, pls. 459 and 460).

Buyers' Premium and Charges

For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
27.5% on the first £20,000 of the hammer price;
26% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £20,000 up to and including £700,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £700,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
