An Early Brass-Barrelled English Lock (Type 2) Blunderbuss
Late 17th Century
With massive barrel with a ring behind the flared muzzle, breech struck with the barrelsmith's mark of Robert Silke 1 or Robert Stedman and with a ramp at the rear notched to form a back-sight, plain iron tang, flat lock with bevelled pointed tail and retained by three side-nails, separate pan retained by a screw on the outside, horizontally acting sear, and replacement dog-catch engaging with the back of the bellied ring-neck cock, figured full stock (some old splits and bruising) with raised border around the rear of the lock and rear retaining screw, apron around the barrel tang, mounts comprising thin iron butt-plate secured by iron tacks, later foliate brass escutcheon engraved with an owner's crest, iron trigger-guard with pointed finials, single baluster brass ramrod-pipe, and later brass-tipped ramrod (iron parts pitted), London proof marks
