A Fine And Rare Lowland-Scots Ballock Dagger
Dated 1616
With sharply tapering blade of stiff diamond section etched and gilt over half its length on each side with foliate scrollwork against a hatched ground, recessed rectangular ricasso etched and gilt with borders of foliage framing the owner's initials 'AC' above the date on one side, and with an unidentified shield of arms on the other, the arms possible representing wool sacks, the hilt comprising characteristic curved iron washer at the base retaining traces of gilding and incised with line decoration continued over into the wood of the grip, polished palisander grip of octagonal section swelling to a moulded top and with characteristic lobes (one with minor splits) at the base, the top and lobes each with domed silver-gilt cap with embossed foliate border and retained by an iron nail, in original hard leather scabbard (terminal incomplete) with integral suspension mount, the outer side tooled with repeated lines of thistles within line borders between three horizontal bands of raised mouldings, the inner side (leather incomplete) with applied label typed 'E.43. dateret 1616. antagelig Skotsk.'
