With heavy octagonal sighted barrels each signed in full in script along the top flat, recessed patent breeches each with four platinum lines and platinum-lined touch-hole, tangs each finely engraved with a martial trophy and incorporating the back-sight, signed border engraved flat locks (one retaining screw incomplete, one cock, one top jaw and screw, and one steel replaced) each decorated with a martial trophy on the tail and with a starburst behind the rainproof pan, engraved safety-catches and rollers, highly figured half-stocks with chequered rounded butts, border engraved blued steel mounts comprising butt-caps decorated with foliage, D-shaped trigger-guards each with a martial trophy on the bow, trigger-plates with pineapple finials, set triggers, silver escutcheons and barrel-bolt escutcheons, the former each engraved with owner's crest, silver fore-end caps, original horn-tipped ramrods, and much original blueing (barrels lightly rust patinated and with some refinishing): in original lined and fitted mahogany case (some compartments loose) with accessories including brass-mounted three-way powder-flask covered in red leather and in fine condition, bullet mould and ramrod, the interior of the lid with maker's trade label (some damage), the exterior (minor bruising) with flush-fitting brass carrying handle centered on a vacant circular brass escutcheon, and complete with its original leather travelling cover, London proof marks

    Believed to have been a wedding gift to Lt. Col. R.M. Oakes (1791-1862) who married Sophie Fletcher, daughter of Edward Fletcher of 126 Park Street, Grosvenor square, in 1828. Details of Lt. Col. Oakes' military career are offered with the lot

    Offered with a handwritten note dated 17 November 1936, signed by S. Springfield and reading 'The crest is not Oakes perhaps Cosly or Fletcher & the pistols might have been a present from a relation' (see provenance above)

    Joseph Egg, brother of Durs, is recorded at 1 Piccadilly (corner of Piccadilly and Haymarket) between 1814 and 1834. Like his brother he was granted various patents during his career and is recognised as one of the great London gunmakers.
