    The model for the mother in African Mother and Child was Namtanda Jaberwu, a student who had also posed for nude drawings whilst pregnant. The baby is a version of Second Portrait of Leda (at four months), cat.no.301, but tilted backwards. Silber writes that the present lot was intended by Epstein as part of Slave Hold (cat.no.318).
