Many-times British sidecar champion Colin Seeley bought Associated Motor Cycles' racing department when the company went into receivership in 1966. Seeley's motorcycle dealership held an AMC agency and he was already well familiar with the Plumstead firm's race engines, having commenced his racing career with a G50-powered outfit. Believing that the engines possessed further potential if equipped with state-of-the-art cycle parts, the previous year he had constructed the first Seeley frame to house a Matchless G50 engine, and the AMC purchase enabled him to produce complete Seeley G50 and 7R machines. With their improved frames, the four-stroke singles enjoyed renewed competitiveness, Derek Minter winning first time out at the start of the 1966 season on both the 350cc 7R and 500cc G50-engined Seeleys. The Seeley frame progressed from the duplex cradle original to the similar but lighter Mk2 on which works rider Dave Croxford won the British 500 Championship in 1968. The Mk3 and Mk4 versions dispensed with the conventional lower duplex loop, a move that allowed privateers to fit the Norton Commando engine, for use in Formula 750 and open-class racing, as well as the more-usual Matchless G50 or AJS 7R units. Several of these Commando-engined variants were fitted with additional down-tubes to support the weightier twin-cylinder engine.

Built from 'new old stock' parts, this Seeley-Commando replica was purchased at a Las Vegas auction but has been more exhibited than ridden since then. The machine consists of a nickel-plated Wasp-built frame and a 750cc Norton Commando engine built and tuned by marque specialist and well-known classic racer, Mick Hemmings. Other noteworthy features include a Dunstall twin-disc front brake, Norton forks, alloy yokes, Triumph conical rear hub, alloy wheel rims, Quaife five-speed gearbox, stainless steel exhaust system and new tyres. 'PHJ 505K' has featured in Classic Racer and Classic Bike magazines and also in Alistair Walker's book The Café Racer Phenomenon. Described as a useable, fast and fine-handling machine, ideal for classic track days, this rare, road-registered Seeley-Commando café racer is offered with current MoT/tax and Swansea V5 registration document.
