The necklace composed of graduating oval micromosaic plaques depicting various genre scenes including classical architectural vistas, floral bouquets and figures in peasant dress, each plaque connected by swags of gold chain (some broken), accompanied by a pair of pendent earrings depicting Roman ruins and a stomacher, originally composed of three plaques (one missing) depicting lovebirds in a chariot and a harlequin, the two plaques connected by a writhing serpent motif, lengths: necklace 43.0cm, earring 3.3cm, stomacher 2.6cm and 1.6cm, fitted case (3) (partially illustrated)

Footnotes

  • Tourists to Italy in the 19th century would often purchase micromosaic plaques individually and have them mounted as jewellery on their return home. This may be such an example due to the inconsistent nature of the subject matter.
