Following a distinguished career with Oldsmobile, Ford and Regal, Robert Craig Hupp established manufacture of motor cars bearing his name in 1909 in Detroit, Michigan. The first Hupmobile was a four cylinder 16.9hp Runabout with sliding gear transmission and this car, designated the Model 20, found 1,618 customers in the first year. Launched at the Detroit Motor Show in February 1909, it was priced at $750 and Emil Nelson's engineering skills produced a car that was sophisticated and reliable. This was proven between November 1910 and January 1912 when a Hupmobile touring car completed a round the world promotional tour of 48,600 miles crossing 26 different countries. The Model 20 was offered with a choice of four different body styles, including the Runabout, Torpedo, Touring and Coupe and survivors are comparatively rare today. Hupp left the company in 1911 following a disagreement with the board, but Hupmobile continued, the Model 32 of 1912 and onwards, an all steel bodied car, being the mainstay of pre-Great War production. Hupmobile built 6,079 cars in 1911, with sales figures climbing rapidly from year to year, testimony to the high regard these cars were held in.

Believed to have been owned by the one Adelaide family from 1953 until the mid-1980s, this delightful little Hupmobile was beautifully restored by the previous owner in Mount Gambier, South Australia before passing to the present owner, one of Australia's most respected collectors, a few years ago. The car presents very well, with good paint, upholstery and cosmetics and appears to be in very original order. With lightweight coachwork and four cylinders, the Hupmobile offers decent veteran performance and is ideal for VCC club rallies.
