c.1952/53 Velocette 249cc KSS/KTT Mk VIII 250
Frame no. TBC
Noted tuner and speedway racer Mike Erskine from Southampton is believed to have been the first owner of this particular bike. Assembled using a circa 1946/47 KSS frame and a 250cc KTT engine bought directly from Velocette after the factory withdrew from Grand Prix racing at the end of 1951, it uses all Velocette components including the gearbox, wheels and fuel tank. Velocette had been the only British factory campaigning a fresh design in the 250 class at that time, having introduced its new double-overhead-camshaft engine in time for the ’51 season. This engine was modelled on the hugely successful 350cc KTT that had rewarded Velocette with the World Championship in 1949 and 1950. The frame used was a modified KTT MkVIII equipped with telescopic front fork, while the gearbox, initially a four-speed unit, was changed to a five-speeder early in the year. Sadly, results at international level would prove disappointing, the 250 Velo being outclassed by the dominant Moto Guzzis, its only victory of note being Bill Lomas’ at the national Hutchinson 100 meeting at Silverstone in October.
According to the known history, this Velocette special was raced by someone named Hiscock in the 1950s with some success. The next owner was Don Daly, a noted engine builder, before the Velo passed to Peter Pack, who fully rebuilt the bike in the period 1983-1984 then raced it for half a season in 1984. The current owner, a collector and bike enthusiast from Melbourne, purchased the Velocette in 1985 and after racing it once at Winton, called it a day and retired the bike to his garage until now. Drained and properly stored, the Velo has been regularly turned over but would require re-commissioning before returning to the track. The ignition has been changed from magneto to battery/coil (original magneto base retained) and comes with some spares, including a high compression piston and cylinder.
