The 27th of 120 built
1985 BMW Alpina B7 Turbo Coupé
Chassis no. WAPB7TC014B720027
Founded in 1965 by Burkard Bovensiepen in Kaufbeuren, Bavaria, the German firm of Alpina began producing tuned versions of BMW models in the 1960s before BMW's own Motorsport Department launched its now famous 'M' range. A close collaborator with BMW from its earliest days, Alpina enjoys motor manufacturer status in Germany and can take much of the credit for establishing BMW's high performance image thanks to a succession of sensational road cars and countless race-track victories.
This rare Alpina model is based on the BMW 635CSi (E24 chassis). Mechanically similar to the 5-Series saloons, BMW's 6-series coupé debuted in 1976 incorporating some components destined for the yet-to-be-announced 7-Series. Karmann styled like the preceding 3.0CS/CSi, the newcomer was similarly well-specified, featuring all-independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and power-assisted steering as standard. The existing 2,985cc, overhead-camshaft six was carried over to the 630, the latter becoming the 635 when up-engined to 3,453cc in 1979. Improved suspension and a slightly smaller (3,430cc) but more refined power unit were introduced in 1982. Stylish, fast and well engineered, the 635 enjoyed a production run lasting into the 1990s, being periodically updated in line with its sister models.
Alpina produced several different versions of its B7 model on the 635CSi chassis, the B7 Turbo Coupé/1 being manufactured between 1984 and 1987. Powered by the 326bhp B7/2 engine, the Coupé/1 raced to 100km/h (62mph) in fractionally over 6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 267km/h (166mph), staggering figures for a mainstream production car 25 years ago and still highly respectable today.
Its dashboard plaque recording the car as number '27' (of only 120 built), the un-restored example we offer was first registered on 1st May 1985 and has had only two owners. The car has covered 84,000 kilometres from new and comes with full service history and German Zulassungbescheisigung Teil I + II.
