Green fields with a mountain beyond signed and dated 'Pierneef 21' (lower left) oil on canvas laid to board 40.5 x 55.5cm (15 15/16 x 21 7/8in).
Footnotes
The present lot, with the dark green, purple and blue mountains and lush green fields with trees, presents a landscape painted with a directly factual purpose. Pierneef, like most of the artists at the time, practised an impressionistic approach. Pierneef's early approach to this style is indicated in the thick paint application, consideration of lighting and rich palette. His early style was especially reminiscent of his tutors Pieter Wenning and Frans Oerder; this landscape's darkened foliage and sky is particularly influenced by Wenning.
