Property of various owners
[TITANIC] A letter from the Prince of Wales mentioning the Titanic disaster
autograph letter signed (“Edward”), 2-1/2pp (recto and verso), 8vo (conjoined leaves), Paris, May 11, 1912, on his Royal stationery, to …. Cookson,
The last part of the letter relates the future King's feelings on sinking:
"The sinking of the Titanic was indeed a terrible disaster, though... it was a very fine display of bravery and self control on the part of all men. I'm afraid the inquiry is going very much against the White Star Company as it has been proved the ship was doing 21 knots at the moment of collision, and that she never decreased at the wrning of ice. I am also afraid that the Board of Trade rules were not closely followed in regards to boat drill etc. before starting on the ship's maiden voyage."
7 x 9 in. (18 x 22.8 cm.)

Footnotes

  • Edward, Prince of Wales, would later become King Edward VIII
