Partial Slice of the NWA 5717 Meteorite — Among the Most Primitive Planetary Matter Known (3.05 Subtype)
Chondrite Ungrouped (CH-UNGR) Subtype 3.05
Western Sahara

Providing a rare peek at the raw ingredients from which planetary bodies are composed, NWA 5717 contains primordial matter never previously seen. This is why it was a cover story of METEORITE magazine and why the Journal of the Lunar and Planetary Conference (XLI) abstract on NWA 5717 was entitled "The Extra-Ordinary Chondrite: Northwest Africa 5717." Most meteorites are ordinary chondrites (stone meteorites that contain silica-rich inclusions referred to as chondrules). And the vast majority of all chondrites are metamorphosed as a result of heat and pressure that obscure its original constituents. This is not the case with NWA 5717 (the 5717th meteorite recovered and classified from the North West African grid of the Sahara Desert). Scientists agree that samples of NWA 5717 contain some of the most primitive and pristine planetary matter that exists. Think of it as the original eggs, sugar and flour prior to "baking." Of the tens of thousands of chondritic meteorites, NWA 5717 is also 1 of only 14 that are unclassifiable and designated CH-UNGR or ungrouped. Every great meteorite collection will contain a sample of NWA 5717. For the serious collector, this specimen features the light and dark signature lithologies which are packed with a galaxy of chondrules. A copy of the Journal of the Lunar and Planetary Conference abstract accompanies this offering of what is some of the most primitive planetary material known. Measures 44 x 30 x 2mm (1.75 x 1 x .1 inches) and 11.189 grams
