Historic Manhattan Project Glass Sphere
Pristine clarity is seen in this high-tech material produced for a reactor viewing window employed in the production of plutonium for the atomic bomb known as Fat Man. Specifications for this heavily leaded, extraordinarily clear glass were highly exacting as many layers were needed to protect scientists from radiation. Due to it high lead content, 70%, the material is extraordinarily laborious to carve. Despite the material's provenance, the glass is not radioactive. See lot 2189 for more information. Diameter 4in
