  • PROVENANCE:
Sale, Bonhams, London, 9 July 2003, lot 12.

Each panel in an integrated mount of gesso and gilt with Prince of Wales feather relief.

The present pair of paintings has traditionally been ascribed to Benjamin West, who painted these subjects for George III. At the Battle of Poitiers, 19th September 1356, the English under the Prince of Wales, known as the Black Prince, routed a much larger French army and even succeeded in capturing the French King John. The second painting shows the captured King and his son, Philip being brought before the Prince of Wales.

Although Mortimer was a versatile artist whose range included portraiture, etching, book illustration and Arcadian landscapes, he was primarily a painter of historical subjects. He was a dedicated student of the prevailing academic doctrine, which placed history painting at the top of importance of subject matter. The subjects of his paintings were chosen from great British literature.
Sadly, Mortimer's promising career was cut short by his untimely death at the age of thirty-nine. He was considered a rising star in the circles of British painting and he regularly submitted works to the Society of Artists of Great Britain, of which he was the President in 1774.
