Lot Details
DICKENS, CHARLES. 1812-1870.
Bleak House. London: Bradbury & Evans, March 1852–September 1853.
20 parts in 19. 8vo (221 x 140 mm). Illustrated by H.K. Browne ("Phiz") with 38 engravings, frontispiece, vignette title and cover. Original blue wrappers. In custom chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. Occasional light finger soiling, several parts rebacked, a few expert repairs.

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL MONTHLY PARTS. Advertisements corresponding to Hatton and Cleaver, with the following exceptions: "Newcomers" slip on yellow paper present at back of part 3, "Crochet Cotton" slip present at back of 19/20. The first part of Bleak House sold 30,000 copies and subsequent parts upwards of 40,000. The novel carried more advertisements than any other Dickens work save Our Mutual Friend, and this copy retains them all. "Phiz" experimented with machine-tinted etching for ten of his illustrations of the novel, and these have become known as the "The Dark Plates" for their chiaroscuro effect. Eckel pp 78-81; Hatton and Cleaver pp 273-304.
